ACD Systems

"The BCGControlBar Library was chosen for its rich feature set and MFC architecture."

The company:

Headquartered in Victoria, BC, Canada since 1993, ACD Systems (TSX:ASA) is one of the world's leading developers and marketers of digital imaging software. Through advanced Internet distribution and strategic partnerships, ACD has accrued millions of users and over 33,000 corporate customers worldwide, including many Fortune 500 companies.

ACD is at the forefront of the digital imaging industry. As a leader in software development, ACD offers a range of high-quality software products for consumers, professionals and developers, including ACDSee™, Canvas™ and ACD FotoSlate™.

ACDSee's ease-of-use, speed and affordability make it the leading photo management solution for consumers, corporations and professional users. It has won accolades from industry experts and publications worldwide, including PC World, PC Magazine, PEI Magazine, and American PHOTO, and is available in 10 languages: English, French, Italian, German, Spanish, Dutch, Japanese, Traditional Chinese, Simplified Chinese and Korean.

The challenge:

ACDSee has a demanding, sophisticated user base. Our customers need to organize, search, edit and view tens of thousands of images. When dealing with such large image collections, being able to customize the user interface and workflow becomes a must. At the same time the UI must be attractive and unobtrusive, to complement the images rather than compete with them.

The solution:

The BCGControlBar library provided an easy way to enhance the user interface in ACDSee. We were able to quickly implement complex UI features, allowing us to concentrate on the core functionality of ACDSee. Many of the components offered by the BCGControlBar library were used as is, while others were tailored to fit our exact needs.

The result:

ACDSee looks great and users can run the application the way they want. They are able to hide unused interface features, and thanks to the docking framework, position other elements exactly where they want them. The ability to configure keyboard short cuts puts commands at the user's finger tips rather than forcing them to navigate through menus. The end result is a flexible application that allows users to optimize their work flow so they can get back to doing what they love best: taking pictures.
